Five Reasons To Bike Ride

Have you thought about how much you enjoyed a bike ride back when you were a kid but have been too intimidated to get back on the proverbial bicycle workout? The following five cycling benefits for reasons why you will get back in the saddle again. Biking is easy to pick up. No matter what your fitness level is, you can handle biking. All you have to do is regain your balance on that bike, and you'll be off! Feel free to go at whatever pace you feel comfortable, slowly working your way up as you get more comfortable.

Biking is a fabulous cardio exercise that burns plenty of calories. Let's compare calorie burning for a few forms of exercise, assuming you weigh about 150 pounds and exercise for a half-hour each day. A half-hour of biking (moderate pace, easy course) is worth 264 calories. The same amount of time for general swimming will cover 200 calories. A half-hour walk will only burn 132 calories. Hop on that bike and pedal hard for a calorie-burning session. Biking is versatile.

You can do it inside and outside, at the gym, at home, and on vacation. Even hotels have bikes in their workout centers, and resorts and vacation towns usually rent bikes from local shops. There’s no excuse not to bike. You can bike to actually get places and do things while achieving cycling benefits at the same time. Try biking instead of driving a car so that you combine your exercise routine with a bicycle workout for your daily commute or errands. You can actually get somewhere, doing something that is both good for your body and for the environment. Just make sure to invest in the proper gear—a helmet, rearview mirror, reflectors, and a bike lock—to keep you and your bike safe.

Biking is gentle on the joints, unlike so many forms of exercise. If you’ve injured yourself while running or playing another sport, you may find a bike ride to be a welcome change. It’s a low impact form of exercise that still makes use of your major muscle groups and challenges your heart and lungs. Tune-up, your bike, get the latest gear and set out for a good long bike ride. Try biking with a friend or a bike club for maximum safety and support for long road trips. Or, if you prefer biking indoors, check out your local fitness club's spin classes.
